The Ecumenical Mission Team,
organized in cooperation with the Greater Fairmont Council of
Churches is planning a Spring trip to Long Island, NY. That area
was devastated in October, 2012 by Superstorm Sandy and is in
need of volunteers to assist with the rebuilding homes.
The team will be hosted by Samaritan’s Purse who is providing
project management, building materials, tools, lodging and food
during our stay. The dates of the trip are March 9-14, 2014 which
happens to coincide with Spring Break at our local universities.
All people of faith are welcome to participate.
Guidelines for the group are:
-
Participants
must be at least 18 years of age, be in reasonably good
health and have had a tetanus shot within the last five
years.
-
Participants
will pay a $100 fee or arrange for their church to sponsor
them on the trip.
-
It
is not a requirement that each person bring their own tools
as these will be provided and shared as needed.
-
Due
to limited space in the work camp we are able to take ten
(10) people on the trip so don’t delay if you are
interested in making the trip. All applications must be back
by Thursday February 20th.
-
Each
day the group will observe a morning and evening devotional
prayer within a larger group.
-
We
will share in the preparation of meals as well as
cleanup.
-
Workdays
will be 7-8 hours long on worksites with breaks for lunch
and refreshments.
-
Both
skilled and non-skilled labor is needed.
The experience combines work, prayer, service and community
building into a faith enrichment opportunity. Donations are
welcome to help offset the team’s costs over and above
participant fees. Checks may be sent to: St. Peter the Fisherman
CC, 407 Jackson Street, Fairmont, WV 26554 (Note: Mission Fund).
